Year of anniversaries and change

RANDLEMAN, N.C. - In a sold-out event, Randleman Chamber and community members packed Snyder Farms restaurant on May 13 for its annual Community Banquet & Auction and to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the formation of the Chamber. "It's been a busy year since the last banquet," said Executive Director David Caughron as he took the microphone for welcoming remarks.

Reflecting on activities of the Chamber and the community, Caughron informed the group that the Randleman Lions Club is celebrating 70 years of service and that the 2008 Richard Petty Golf Tournament was 20 years old in April. The chamber is growing in membership and is currently preparing to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of NASCAR Day in October.

Caughron further considered the historic significance of textile manufacturing in Randleman and took time to officially honor Common Wealth Hosiery. The family-owned company, now in its 92nd year, continues to operate under its third generation. “In textiles, it's almost unheard of today,” said Caughron.

As communities and businesses grow, changes are necessary and leaders step up to the challenge. According to Caughron, in the 1960s, business leaders saw the need for a municipal parking lot and deeded the area to the city. Today, the parking lot makes it easier to shop downtown and to visit the library.

In the late 1980s, the Northern Randolph Historical Society needed a roof at St. Paul’s. The Chamber and Holiday Tours sold tickets to a cruise to help raise the money needed. When the Pilgram Tract Society burned, the Chamber, Lions Club and Jaycees raised $5000 to help out.

Today the Chamber partners with Randolph County Partnership for Children, RCC Small Business Center and Communities in Schools.

Downtown Randleman is scheduled for a major change as CVS Pharmacy continues its plan to build a stand-alone unit on the corner of South Main and E. Naomi Street. Caughron sees it as a “positive impact on neighboring businesses”, yet is “bittersweet” because several business owners who have been in the area for many years have to relocate their companies or start “a new chapter” in their lives. “They put the interest of the community first,” said Caughron. Yet, there is no doubt that the move will help to revitalize downtown.

This year’s banquet sponsors were Deep River Automotive, Pugh Funeral Home, Security Savings Bank, Ship to Shore Cruises, CommunityOne Bank, J.D. Wilkins Company and Maxton McDowell, CPA.

The 2008 Board of Directors are Jim Lanier (JD Lanier Electric), Mark Burrow (Sir Pizza Restaurant), Lisa Huffman, (Security Savings Bank), Beth Rush (Uniquely Yours Framing & Gifts), Brian Causey (Causey Auctions), Leigh Anne Nelson (Nelson Alarms), Pam White (CommunityOne Bank), Rick Flickinger (The Timken Company), Dee Pennell (Piedmont Digital Solutions), Jeff Freeman (Freeman’s Florist) and Lee Hilliard, Royal Tours (Honorary).

Annual Archdale-Trinity Chamber Open Golf Tournament Prepares for Tee Time

ARCHDALE, N.C. -There’s still time to get on the green, and quite possibly in the green, for the Archdale-Trinity Chamber Open Golf Tournament. Registration is underway as golfers line up for an opportunity to take home the $10,000.00 dollar hole-in-one cash prize sponsored by The Douglas E. Smith Agency of Archdale. “We’re thinking this is the year someone takes home the big ten,” said Chamber Director Beverly Nelson referring to the ten thousand dollar cash prize. “We’re always hopeful, but this year, we’re very optimistic; we feel the timing is right!”

You can’t argue with Nelson’s logic; the timing is always right to win ten thousand dollars! On the outside chance the big ten does not go to anyone, Nelson says everyone will still leave happy. With everything the Chamber has planned, thanks in part to their corporate sponsors, a good time is one sure bet during this competition.“We owe our good time to a lot people,” Nelson added. “This event, like all other events, comes from the generosity of the community and generous sponsors like North State Communications, Ace/Avant Concrete Construction and Archdale Insurance Planning and our various Hole Sponsors.”

The tournament will take place on Friday, June 6, 2008, at Holly Ridge Golf Links on U.S. 311 in Archdale, NC. Registration will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A Putting Green, sponsored by High Point Veterinary Hospital, included in the registration fee, will begin at 11:30 a.m. The winner will receive a golf bag. Tee time is 1 p.m. Additional prizes include Par 3’s, Longest Drive, Door Prizes, and of course - the big ten! A cook-out and awards reception will immediately follow the tournament.

The deadline for registration as an individual golfer or foursome is Friday, May 30, 2008. The cost is $75.00 per person which includes green fees, cart, snacks, dinner, gift bags and door prizes.
