Meeting on sales tax referendum

Posted 3/20/2008

The Archdale-Trinity Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a public meeting on the proposed 0.25% sales tax requested by the Randolph County Commissioners. The public will vote on the issue in the May 6 primary. In a March 18 statement, the Archdale-Trinity Chamber pledges its support of the sales tax referendum and is sponsoring the forum as a way to educate and inform members and citizens.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, April 17 at 7:00p.m. in Archdale at 213 Balfour Drive. Randolph County officials will be present to take questions.

According to a fact sheet posted on the county Web site, state law does not require counties to designate how the money from such a tax will be used. The posting does state, “It is the intention of the Board of Commissioners to use it for growing infrastructure costs.” The Commissioners are defining infrastructure as “public schools, community college facilities, water lines and other capital needs.”

Blog help available for candidates

“Blogs are an ideal platform for candidates of any party affiliation,” says Rob Ainbinder, president of Deep River Communication and editor of Randolph Is Talking, a blogging community made up of local bloggers.

“We are collecting the voices of Randolph County bloggers in one easy to find place,” says Ainbinder, who describes his role as “a conduit for ideas, a promoter” for the blogging Web site. “Randolph Is Talking is your passport to Op-Ed type columns you might not see in print, rants and raves that might never make the airwaves or local gathering spots.”

According to a March 1 post on Randolph Is Talking, Ainbinder is offering to help setup and train candidates in Randolph County who want to start blogging. They will use some type of commercially available blogging service and then be added to the list of bloggers on Randolph Is Talking and Randolph Is Talking’s BlogScanner. “We familiarize the candidate or designated staff on blog etiquette, establishing a comment policy which encourages productive discussion and some generally accepted ‘do's & dont’s,’ ” says Ainbinder.

Randolph Is Talking was launched in 2005 and is a service of Deep River Communication which specializes in Internet strategy, search engine optimization, email marketing and web design.
